The Aral Sea

The Aral Sea is a lake which is located in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The lake was in 1960 as big as the Benelux, but unfortunately isn’ t that the case anymore; the lake is shrinking.
The fact that the lake is in a desert climate, doesn’ t help to avoid it drying out. Because of the desert climate there is little or no precipitation. Water also evaporates faster by the high temperatures.
There is another reason. In 1960, they decided they were going tu use the water to irrigate the cotton farms. Because they had a lot of water drained, the Amu Darya, one of the two rivers passing through the lake, came completely drained out. And the Syr Darya, the other of the two rivers, had a very low water level.
